The Merano High Way

The Merano High Way

Walking along one of the most beautiful High Ways of the Alps, the Merano High Way.

At a virtually constant altitude we hike around Gruppo di Tessa, from valley to valley. The whole path, always identified with number 24, is 100 km long, split into several legs. The High Way can be reached from several locations. During the journey we meet many welcoming establishments, comfortable farmhouses and enchanting huts. The views are always wonderful, and together with the distinctive cultural and alpine landscape, the old farmsteads make the Merano High Way even more interesting.

From Tirolo, the ideal starting point is the Hochmuth/Alta Muta cable car. This is the start of the first leg, from Tirolo to the Casa del Valico hut, 1,839 metres above sea level. The top can be reached by cable car. But well-seasoned hikers can also go up on foot, following paths no. 23 and 24 from the Tiroler Kreuz restaurant, passing by the Talbauer tavern.

Already from the top Hochmuth cable car station one can admire the wonderful views of Merano and its surroundings. We then continue along “Hans Frieden” path no. 24, to the Malga Leireralm hut, 1,522 metres above sea level, and then to the Hochganghaus (Casa del Valico) hut, 1,839 metres above sea level. After a well-deserved rest, we comfortably make our way back to Tirolo.
